Kansas City Chiefs Coach Suggests Taylor Swift Helped the Team Win the Super Bowl

Much ado has been made over the high-profile love story between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce that culminated in a Super Bowl victory kiss in front of millions earlier this month. And given Swift's impact on NFL ratings, it didn't take long for tinfoil-hatters to suggest that the whole thing had been scripted from the start of the season.

However, Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt has dispelled of that notion, and even went so far as to suggest that the Swift effect helped the Chiefs to the team's third win in five years.

Merritt made the comments on a recent episode of the The Sports Shop with Reese and K-Mac podcast, and even revealed a little-known fact about the timeline of the relationship.

"When she started to come around, it was privately," Merritt explained. "She was coming into the stadiums without people really knowing until the camera put a big spotlight on it."

"But upon meeting her, I felt like she actually added to what it was that we were trying to do," he continued. "Because there were so many people that were hating the fact that she was being shown on the TV that, you know what—you’re part of our family because you’re now with Travis. So, therefore, you’re our little sister, or ... you’re part of our family."

"So what happened was, she actually affected the team in a positive way, alright? It wasn’t a negative way. It was, everybody was excited that Travis was happy," Merritt recalled. "So when my player, a brother, is happy beside me, that helps me and that encourages me and so Travis came in there a different man. So, she helped us."

If it sure sounds like Merritt is giving partial credit to Swift for bringing the Chiefs to victory, he made sure to nail that point home in his final words on the subject.

"As a matter of fact, I would hate to say this in front of [co-host Pam Thompson-Smith]," he joked. "Pam is a Cowboys fan—but [Swift] actually in her first year won a Super Bowl and [quarterback Dak Prescott] has been with the Cowboys how many years?"

"She won a Super Bowl in her first year in the NFL, how 'bout that?" Merritt added.
