Kate Middleton and Prince William's relationship, which started in college, wasn't complete smooth sailing into marriage. The two did briefly split in March 2007, and, per an old royal story Express recirculated this week, then-25-year-old Kate left England in the immediate aftermath. She and her mother Carole Middleton went to Dublin, Ireland on vacation, reportedly with friends. The press at the time did not know of the breakup; they didn't report it until April 14.

Kate, an art history major, went to the Urban Retreat Gallery, where she attended family friend and artist Gemma Billington's exhibition, and the National Gallery of Ireland during the trip. She and William ultimately reconciled in June.

Kate later spoke about how the split was ultimately a good thing for her. “I think I at the time wasn't very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person," she said later in 2010 during their engagement interview. "You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realized. Or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you're younger. I really valued that time for me as well although I didn't think it at the time, looking back on it."
