As Covid restrictions lift across the U.K., the royal family’s timetables are filling up with in-person engagements. And today, Prince Charles and Camilla joined forces with the Duchess of Cambridge for rare joint outing to see the work of the Prince’s charitable foundation.

Charles, Camilla, and Kate arrived at Trinity Buoy Wharf in east London at 11 a.m. where they were shown around The Prince’s Foundation’s training site in the area. Clarence House said that Kate had been invited to attend the event by Charles because of their “shared interest and longstanding support of the arts and creative industries.” They met with students working on geometry and mosaic projects as well as fashion, fine art, photography, sculpture and animation work.

“They were really interested in observing those skills and making sure that there is quality education like this out there for students to access,” said Daniel McAulifee, education director at The Prince’s Foundation. “The Duchess of Cambridge was very impressed with the quality of drawing and she really loved the textiles,” he added.

The trio stopped to chat with Nicole Christie, who founded luxury womenswear brand Ellipsis after studying on the Modern Artisan course run by the Prince’s Foundation and Yoox Net-a-Porter. After showing them her clothes and accessories, Nicole gave Camilla a pale green bag and Kate a cream one. She also gifted Princess Charlotte a pink scrunchie. “I just thought I couldn’t leave her out,” Nicole said. “It’s been such an honor for them to take time to talk to me about something I started in my front room. They were asking about my inspiration behind the collection. They wanted to know about my journey.”

The three royals also spoke with student Florence Harrison, 19, who was sculpting a head out of wax. “They came off as very friendly genuine people,” she said. “With Prince Charles it was very much about the course and drawing,” she said of what they discussed. “With Camilla it was about the workshops and which ones I’ve enjoyed the most, and how she would like to join in on some of the workshops. And then with Kate it was just about the whole practice and concept of translating things from 3D into 2D and vice versa.”

When dropping in on a life drawing class, the royals met Abigail Ede, 18, who is going to study Fine Art at Oxford University following her work with the Foundation. “I was actually quite nervous before they got here but they were really nice,” she said. “They were just asking how my project was and how I find things here.”

Before they departed, the royals stopped to say hello to children from a nearby school, many who were waving at them through the window.
