Kate Winslet doesn’t want you to think she’s ageless, perfect, or wrinkle-free, and she’s signed a contract to make sure that happens. The Oscar-winning actress who is a Lanc?me spokesperson told E! News that it is in her contract with the brand that her ads won’t be retouched. It’s a big move for a beauty brand, especially since heavily airbrushed ads have become standard in the industry.

Winslet, 40, says that her decision is based on not wanting to put out false ideas about what women really look like, especially as they get older. “I do think we have a responsibility to the younger generation of women,” Winslet told E! News. “I think they do look to magazines, I think they do look to women who have been successful in their chosen careers and they want people to look up to, and I would always want to be telling the truth about who I am to that generation, because they’ve got to have strong leaders. We’re all responsible for raising strong young women, so these are things that are important to me.”

Clearly Winslet has zeroed in on something that younger women want to see changed. Zendaya was so upset about Modeliste magazine slimming her hips and thighs that the magazine pulled the issue before it hit the stands. And Demi Lovato recently did a nude photo shoot with Vanity Fair, requesting specifically that the images not be retouched.

Winslet has spoken out about retouching for years. In 2009 she told Harper’s Bazaar: “I have wrinkles here, which are very evident. And I will particularly say when I look at movie posters, ‘You guys have airbrushed my forehead. Please can you change it back?’ I’d rather be the woman they’re saying 'She’s looking older’ about than 'She’s looking stoned.’” What’s inspiring now is that Winslet has used her clout to do something about the practice of taking every blemish, wrinkle, and under-eye circle away, and that a major beauty brand has agreed. That being said, lighting, makeup, and a star that’s only 40 and gorgeous will still add up to some pretty perfect images.
