Katie Couric recalls date and kiss with Bob Saget — and how he didn't call her again
Katie Couric is kissing and telling about her short-lived romance with late comedian Bob Saget.
The 66-year-old journalist spoke about her brief courtship with Saget during the Oct. 24 episode of her iHeart podcast, “Next Question with Katie Couric,” which featured Saget’s widow, Kelly Rizzo, as one of her two special guests.
At the start of the episode, Couric explained that she is launching a new podcast segment, called “Katie Plus One,” where she invites friends to be her “partner in crime” for one episode. She thought Rizzo would be the perfect choice and referred to the 44-year-old blogger as a “new friend.”
Rizzo shared that they met after Couric reached out to her through a mutual friend following Saget’s death in January 2022 at the age of 65. Couric empathized with her because she went through a similar grieving period when she was around Rizzo’s age after her first husband, Jay Monahan, died in 1998.
Couric offered a “friendly ear” to Rizzo during that dark time, Rizzo said, and the two bonded.
“I just remember thinking, when I was reading about what happened to Bob, who I always really liked,” Couric said before revealing her romantic past with the “Full House” star.
“Actually I had a date with him once, as you know. I really liked him,” she said. “I found him so cute and funny and amusing. And I did think we shared a pretty nice kiss in the foyer of my apartment, but—”
Rizzo chimed in and shared that Saget also thought highly of the former TODAY anchor. “He always thought you were lovely. He was a big fan. He adored you.”
But, it sounds like there just wasn’t a spark between Saget and Couric.
“Well, not enough to call me again,” Couric quipped. “But that’s OK, that's OK, because it all worked out.”
The two then gushed about the friendship they formed over the past year and a half. Rizzo praised Couric, saying there is “no better mentor” that could help her as she enters a new chapter in her personal life and career.
It was then time to introduce their guest: John Stamos. Couric called his appearance on the podcast “serendipitous” considering his decadeslong friendship with Saget.
“Katie, if you and I went out instead of you and Bob, we’d probably still be dating,” Stamos joked after Couric introduced him. “Just don’t tell my wife.”
Couric replied, “Well, you didn’t ask, John. And I don’t think you were available at the time.”
He recalled Saget feeling “intimidated” by Couric before their date. He said he had to give his “Full House” co-star a few tips.
“I used to have to Cyrano him. Like I would tell him what to text and what to say and what to do on these dates …” Stamos remembered.
He asked if they kissed on their date and Couric confirmed they did.
“And as Kelly knows, he was a good kisser,” she cheekily said.
“I know too,” Stamos added. “There are three of us here that have kissed him.”
He compared his relationship with Saget to an old married couple. “We didn’t have sex and we argued all the time,” Stamos joked.
Couric and Rizzo laughed and complimented his one-liner.
“Well, you know, I learned from Bob,” Stamos said.
Stamos shares more funny stories about his friendship with Saget in his new memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me.”
He wrote that he and Saget would argue on set about who would hold Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen during photo shoots and promos because Stamos started to develop a strong bond with the twins, despite Saget portraying their father on the show.
“I’m the father of these babies; why is Stamos getting all the good scenes with them?” he recalled Saget asking.
During an appearance on the 3rd hour of TODAY in April, Stamos described Saget as a “through line” in his book.
“He was one of my dearest friends and a beautiful man. But he never left anything off the table. He always said, ‘I love you. I’m proud of you,’” Stamos shared. “And so that’s a good lesson, I think: Tomorrow’s never promised.”
