Katie Holmes' Go-to Travel Accessory Is so Comfy, Suri Cruise Loves It Too

It’s hard to believe it was 20 years ago that Katie Holmes came into our world (on a row boat, no less) as every boy’s dream girl next door with those big brown eyes, shiny hair, and razor-sharp wit on iconic teen drama Dawson’s Creek.

Though we will always love her as Joey Potter, Holmes has gone on to play many roles in films and television including "Batman Begins," "The Romantics," "Logan Lucky," the mini-series The Kennedys, and Showtime’s Ray Donovan. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she also recently took a turn at directing with the feature film "All We Had," which she also starred in.

This fall she will actually be returning to TV (sadly not in a Dawson’s Creek reunion, but don’t give up hope) with a role in a juicy new FBI drama for FOX. But before that she will be enjoying her summer and helping others do the same.

Holmes paired up with American Express and Delta Air Lines for the “Perksicle Tour” presented by #DeltaAmexPerks. The tour will travel the country from June 1-July 22, treating Delta SkyMiles? American Express Card Members to complimentary ice pops from local vendors. Additionally, anyone including non-card members may also purchase an ice pop from the truck for $3 as a donation to the American Red Cross. Delta and American Express will then collectively make a donation of the price of each popsicle sold in support of American Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

Travel + Leisure caught up with Holmes at the kick-off of the tour to talk about her packing style (or lack thereof), her best plane hacks, and the exciting thing she got to see on her recent trip to the Middle East.

T+L: What is the best trip you've ever taken?

Katie Holmes: "My most memorable trip was being in London and Paris with my parents for like 10 days together when I was in my 20s. We did Wimbledon and spent Father's Day together and just really enjoyed all the sightseeing together."

What is your packing style? Are you very organized?

"I'm more of a throw it in the bag and go. I'm learning to leave stuff and then purchase things abroad. I am a just grab the passport kind of person. I do a lot of last-minute trips."

Even though you are usually traveling last-minute, do you have a plane uniform?

"For a plane I usually always have a big scarf so I can put it on the pillow or if I get cold, or to be honest it usually goes to my child [Suri Cruise, 12, with ex-husband Tom Cruise]. And I always bring sweats for a longer flight."

What trip are you dying to take?

"I really want to go to New Zealand and I really want to go to Greece."

Do you have a favorite hotel in the world?

"I love H?tel Costes in Paris."

Travel + Leisure: What was the last big trip you took?

"I went to Riyadh [Saudi Arabia] recently. It was so beautiful. It was a long trip, but I really enjoyed it. I love the women that I met. It was really inspiring to see these women enjoying the new freedoms they now have and there is a sense of creativity that is happening."

[Holmes was there with Idris Elba to celebrate a new billion-dollar initiative for Saudi Arabia by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to help modernize the country’s entertainment industry.]

When you travel do you try to keep up with your workout schedule?

"I do try to keep it up because working out after a long flight helps with the jet lag — and drinking a lot of water."

Do you have any hacks for staying calm on a flight?

"I make sure to tell everyone I love that I love them. I'm not a nervous flier but I'm glad when I touch down. I fly a lot."

Any big trips planned for this summer?

"I'm working this summer but I'll also be spending time with my family in the Midwest visiting the lakes out there."

Why did you want to be part of this campaign?

"I love AmEx and Delta and I love that part of this is being donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief so I am excited to be part of that [Holmes has visited some of the Red Cross camps across the country and volunteered there]. I have an AmEx and I fly Delta and I love ice pops!"
