Katy Perry Shaded Taylor Swift on 'American Idol'
The Katy Perry and Taylor Swift feud has been going on so long it's almost hard to remember how it all started. Almost! And now, with Perry as a judge on American Idol, there's been some awkward tension for contestants who decide to sing Taylor Swift songs, considering the history between Swift and one judge who helps decide their fate.
One contestant, when he told the judges he'd be singing a T Swift number, even apologized to Perry, which lead to this beautifully awkward exchange:
DAMN. That's like the music industry version of being like "I like you too... as a friend."
And I get it. There's definitely a dilemma here for contestants. Like, do you sing T Swift because it's your absolute jam and you know you'll rock it but one of the judges may have a bias against you? Do you blatantly acknowledge how awkward it is, like this contestant did? Or do you go with a song you may not be able to belt *quite* as passionately and play it safe when it comes to the judges? It's a tough call, to be sure.
In May 2017, Perry explained that the whole feud (as she sees it) is about backup dancers that she was using on her tour. They wanted to go on tour with Swift, and Perry told them they could go but she wanted them to join her on her next tour. "She wouldn't speak to me... It was a full shut-down and then she writes a song about me and I'm like 'OK, cool, cool, cool. That's how you wanna deal with it?'" Perry said at the time.
Either way, it looks like this feud is not ending soon. Stay tuned for the next episode!
