Kay, so Here’s Why the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team Skipped the Olympics Opening Ceremony
The Olympics Opening Ceremony went down last night and Team USA showed up! In Ralph Lauren outfits that people on Twitter have a lot of feelings about! But you might have noticed that the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team wasn’t at the event—and there’s a good reason why.
A spokeswoman for the team told the New York Times that Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Grace McCallum, MyKayla Skinner, and Jade Carey wouldn’t be at the Opening Ceremony because they’re “focused on preparation.” They did, however, have their own celebration. Jade even posted pics, writing, “Our own little twist on opening ceremonies.”
And Simone also explained their absence on her Instagram Story, saying the pandemic was one of the reasons, and also: “The amount of standing is crazy. USA is usually at the end as well because of alphabetical.” She went on to add, “We’ve actually never attended Opening I believe. *Gym fans help me out if that info is wrong.”
Meanwhile, Olympian Alex Morgan also hopped on social media to say the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team wouldn’t be at the Opening Ceremony, explaining, “We won’t be there in person but we WILL be parading around the hotel in our Opening Ceremony outfits while prepping for game 2 tomorrow!”
