Keanu and Winona's New Rom-Com Is for Grumps
'90s icons Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves are in the middle of cult comebacks: the former as the frazzled Joyce in Stranger Things and the latter as the gruff gun-toter John Wick in the eponymous film series. Now the duo, who have thrice co-starred together-in Bram Stoker's Dracula, A Scanner Darkly, and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee-are joining forces to bring us what looks like the delightfully cynical rom-com of the summer.
According to the trailer, which dropped today, Destination Wedding follows snarky Lindsay (Ryder) and sourpuss Frank (Reeves), who meet-grumpy on their way to the wedding of friends who don't seem too thrilled to have them there. Anyone who has ever been to a wedding, destination or otherwise, will wonder why these two misanthropes didn't just send a check and their regrets, but then we wouldn't have this movie! And we definitely need this movie.
Are these two leads low-key playing themselves? Probably! In the trailer, Ryder gamely tries to tamp down her natural kooky charm with a series of acerbic line-readings and grimaces to convey that she is a woman who is over it. Meanwhile, Reeves delivers every single line with the whisper-growl of a person narrating a documentary about Watergate. Seriously, you may want to turn your volume up; he has a serious case of movie trailer voice.
But no matter: These two miserable souls hear each other loud and clear as they trade barbs like they're on an episode of Will & Grace set in California wine country. Ah, modern romance!
Destination Wedding is set for an August release.
