Kelly Clarkson Sheds Light on the Health Diagnosis That Kickstarted Her Weight Loss

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson has lost a considerable amount of weight over the past few months, and now, she's opening up about the health diagnosis she received that opened her eyes and inspired her journey toward a healthier lifestyle.

The Kelly Clarkson Show host has never shied away from being transparent about her weight fluctuating, and life events that contributed to it—from struggling during her two difficult pregnancies before welcoming her children, to going through a less-than-pleasant divorce, and dealing with depression.

But, it was a very real health precaution from her doctor that put everything in perspective.

During a recent episode of her talk show, the "Since U Been Gone" singer was speaking with her guest, actor Kevin James, when, after he complimented her appearance, she revealed, "Well, I was told I was pre-diabetic."

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), "prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes." Further, it is, unfortunately, wildly common, with "approximately 98 million American adults—more than 1 in 3" being diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

Admitting that she "wasn't shocked," as she was aware she was "a tiny bit overweight," Clarkson continued to provide more insight on the eye-opening conversation she had with her healthcare provider. "They were like, 'You're pre-diabetic. You're right on the borderline.' And I was like, 'But I'm not there yet…'"

And although she had known about it for a while, she clarified the timeline in which she got serious about it: "Then I waited two years and then I was like, 'OK,' I'll do something about it."

Late last year, after shutting down claims that she used popular diabetes/weight loss drug Ozempic to drop the weight, she explained that she eats "a healthy mix" and "limited her sugar and carb intake."

Additionally, she credits her move to NYC for helping her stay active, noting, "Walking in the city is quite the workout."
