Kelly Ripa Takes Issue With 'Weird' Opening for 'Live' Season 36

For season 36 of Live with Kelly and Mark—the first with hosts and spouses Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos together— the show premiered a new opening sequence, but it seems like Ripa isn't a huge fan of the final product.

In the new intro video, Ripa and Consuelos are getting ready for the day, brushing their teeth. When they spit out their toothpaste and rise to their full height once again, the couple has completely changed their outfits, looking ready to walk out the door to work.

While the clip successfully introduces the host and their talk show, Ripa had some personal criticism, voicing her thoughts to Live with Kelly and Mark executive producer, Michael Gelman, during the Sept. 27 episode.

At the start of the show, Ripa said to Gelman, "I noticed something backstage. We were waiting to go on. Does anybody else think it’s weird that we start the show with the opening and Mark and I are spitting into a sink?”

In response, Gelman said that it was "real," before Ripa sarcastically said that it's "really real," referring to the way the two "spin around" and are suddenly dressed up to go out.

Consuelos seemed to agree with Gelman, arguing that it's "relatable," but Ripa questioned him, “Is it? I think it’s weird. I just noticed it. I was like, ‘Wait, are we spitting into a sink?’ That’s so weird."

"It’s the first time I noticed it. It struck me. I try never to watch the show. It’s back there while we’re waiting to go on and there’s a big monitor. I was like, ‘That’s weird. That’s a really weird thing to open a show with,'” she went on.

While Ripa filmed the scene with her husband, it seems like various aspects of the shoot were cut out, such as an eyebrow move from Consuelos that he mentioned.

The new co-host also made it clear that it was "fake spit," with Ripa declaring, "Of course, it was a fake spit. Nothing came out. There’s not even a real sink there. But it’s just a weird look.”

Ripa and Consuelos first started hosting the morning show together as official co-hosts on April 17, after Ryan Seacrest departed the show. The couple began their first official full season together on Sept. 5.
