How Kelly Rowland Inspires Black Girls Who Don’t Feel Beautiful
Kelly Rowland is beautiful, without doubt. But as we all know, even the most gorgeous women possess insecurities.
Rowland belted out confidence-boosting songs in the iconic girl group Destiny’s Child. But it took time for her to actually believe the lyrics and feel secure in her brown skin.
In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald‘s Sunday Life magazine, Rowland revealed that it was Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, who encouraged her to embrace her natural beauty. The woke matriarch would show African-American art to the young singer and say, “Look at your cheekbones, your cheekbones look like that. Look at your skin color, your skin color looks like that.”
Standing in front of a mirror and gazing at her “beautiful, chocolate skin” also allowed Rowland to realize just how important it is to see positive images of black women. She explained:
“I wasn’t just a face for myself, I was a face for other girls who looked like me and I don’t want them to see themselves and not see how incredible they are in their own skin.”
Many celebrities shun the “role model” title for fear of having to always appear perfect, so it’s refreshing to see Rowland embrace this role — flaws and all.
