Kids Fishing Day at Rotary Park returns this Saturday
SAULT STE. MARIE — One of the biggest fishing events in Sault Ste. Marie is happening this weekend at Rotary Park.
The Connor Gorsuch Kids Fishing Day lets hundreds of kids and teens from across the EUP experience a day on the water, even if they have never fished before.
Beginning as a small youth tournament in the St. Marys River, the event has grown over the years and is now a memorial event for Connor Gorsuch, a local boy who died shortly after childbirth.
Connor's father, Gary Gorsuch, was heavily involved with groups such as the Sault Area Sportsmen's Club. After he lost his son, Gorsuch made a sizable donation to the club in his son's memory, and they in turn renamed the tournament to memorialize Connor.
"They've made this one specific day in memory of our son who didn't get to live too long," said Gorsuch.
Now the event is held in Rotary Park, which is regularly stocked with thousands of fish each year specifically so that young kids can enjoy fishing there.
"It seems to grow every year in volunteers and participants," said Gorsuch.
