Kids spending more time outside this summer

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – The arrival of summer means school is out of session. Which also means that kids may be more likely to stay inside.

If you are like most parents, you probably remember staying out until the street lights came on. One local mom said she is raising her kids like she was raised – having fun outdoors.

“We tell our kids all the time ‘it’s better to be outside and play’. Back in our day, kids got out and played. Nowadays they are just on Xbox, so it’s better to keep them outside and playing,” said Cristal Milam.

Playing out in the sunshine can also help people to absorb vitamin D which is essential for development. Encouraging your children to spend more time outside and away from their devices helps improve their physical health too.

Milam says it is also a plus when your children may be fussy or grumpy.

“It’s so crazy for parents. You get them out and let them play and they sleep so much better at night,” said Milam.

You also do not have to travel far to get your kids outside and active. Recreational parks, water parks, and even a quick picnic can get children out and about for the summer.
