King Charles III made his first speech today since ascending the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. As expected, Charles touched on many topics surrounding the passing of his mother, who died at Balmoral yesterday at the age of 96, and her legacy, as well as the changes ahead for the monarchy.

Amidst the news that his eldest son and heir, Prince William, will be taking over Charles's previous role as the Prince of Wales, the king also took a moment to speak about his younger son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan, who stepped back from royal life in 2020.

"I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas," Charles said, referencing the Sussexes' current home in California.

Harry and Meghan famously chose to leave behind their lives as working royals more than two years ago, moving to Montecito with their son Archie. Since then, the couple have also welcomed a second child, their daughter Lilibet Diana, whose name is an homage to both the Queen and Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. Both kids were born without the title of prince or princess, but upon Charles's ascension to the throne, they did inherit them. While Harry also retained his title as prince after stepping back, as well as the status as Duke of Sussex, he and Meghan no longer use the titles titles His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness.

Harry and Meghan were in the UK for a trip to support several charities at the time of the Queen's death, and after traveling to be with the rest of the royal family at Balmoral yesterday, Harry will reportedly be staying in the UK for the time being. It has not yet been announced whether Meghan will also remain in the country, or for how long.
