What We Know So Far About 'Barbie 2'
Barbie has been in theaters for less than a week, and it's already smashing records. Its opening weekend box office is the largest of any movie directed by a woman, and when its numbers are combined with Oppenheimer make last weekend one of the most lucrative in cinema history, especially given that neither movie is a sequel. Plus, with a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and hoards of pink-wearing moviegoers heading to theaters, the Barbie box office will only grow.
As with all successful films, however, the first question out of many viewers' mouths is, "Will there be a sequel?" Given the rapturous reception for Barbie, it certainly seems like the Mattel/Warner Bros. combo behind the movie would be eager to try for a repeat. Here's everything we know about a potential sequel to Barbie:
Will there be a Barbie sequel?
At this point, no Barbie sequel, spinoff, prequel or remake has been greenlit by Mattel or Warner Bros., but it seems inevitable that another Barbie movie of some variety will be announced before too long. As Variety reported, Mattel is firmly staking itself in the movie business. Multiple other Mattel properties have been optioned for films (including a Lena Dunham-directed film about Polly Pockets), and they are focusing on creating franchises. Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz stated, “Successful movies lend themselves to more movies. Our ambition is to create film franchises.” With Barbie's historical success, they will certainly want a new Barbie movie.
When will the Barbie sequel be released?
Since no Barbie sequel has been officially announced, we don't have a release date for the hypothetical Barbie 2. However, it takes multiple years from a film to go from concept to theaters, so its likely we wouldn't see another Barbie movie until 2025/2026 at the earliest.

Who is in the cast of the Barbie sequel?
Since no more Barbie films have been greenlit yet, there has been no casting announcement. If Barbie gets a direct sequel, it would make sense for Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and others to reprise their roles, but that would obviously depend on the story.
What is the plot of the Barbie sequel?
We don't know what the plot of a future Barbie film would be. Kreiz said Barbie is "a very rich universe… It’s a very broad and very elastic brand, in terms of opportunities.” So while we could certainly see a new film that follows Margot Robbie's character into a life as a human, we may also get new Barbie films focused on other characters.
Is there a trailer for the Barbie sequel?
No. Since the film has not been announced or filmed yet, any trailers you see on the internet are made by fans.
Will Margot Robbie be in the Barbie sequel?
We don't know. Since no Barbie sequel has been officially announced, it remains unclear if Robbie would return. If she does, however, you can bet she'll receive a sizable pay bump.

Will Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach make the Barbie sequel?
Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig based on a script that she wrote along with her partner Noah Baumbach (also a lauded director and screenwriter). It is unclear whether the two would return to make a Barbie sequel if one was announced. Both have other projects in the works, and sequels are often not directed or written by the same people who created the original.
What has Greta Gerwig said about a Barbie sequel?
As of now, it seems like Greta Gerwig is fine stepping away from Barbie and allowing others to take the reins. In an interview with Variety she said, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.” While she didn't go into Barbie planning a sequel, she also hasn't completely denied the possibility of her working on another Barbie film either. Only time will tell.
