You Know You Work in Fashion When: a $1,500 Gold Paper Clip Doesn’t Seem That Unreasonable
Whether you realize it or not, the holidays are officially in full swing. Thanksgiving is a mere two weeks away, department stores are beginning to unveil their much belabored holiday windows, and seasonal merch is everywhere you turn. Among the first to announce its special holiday offerings is Tiffany & Co., which just released a limited-edition 18-piece “Out of Retirement” collection of archival jewelry and trinkets at the cooler-than-thou retail emporium Dover Street Market.
“Partnering with Dover Street Market on a global level is a very exciting idea for us,” said Tiffany design director Francesca Amfitheatrof, a very groovy woman with an high art background. She also sang the praises of DSM: “It’s a place where creativity stands out and brands can do projects they wouldn’t normally do. It allows people to dream without creative limits.”
Dream we shall. The pieces, which range in price from $350 to $32,000, are for the person who has everything. Literally. These trinkets are not cheap — there’s a $1,500 18k gold paper clip from 1972, a “$” money clip in 18K for $2,900, and a sterling silver party horn for a cool $1,200 — but they are so well crafted and charming, you almost don’t mind. I might just be drinking the holiday Koolaid (eggnog?) a bit early, but clearly I am not the only one. Following a breakfast this morning to introduce the precious baubles at Dover Street’s New York outpost, at least two of the items (a sterling silver pill box in the shape of a Chinese carton and fish flask) had already sold out. ’Tis the season (for fun and irrational purchases)!
