What Are Konjac Sponges and Do They Live Up to the Face-Brightening Hype?

Updated

Korean beauty has rapidly grown a huge following, thanks in part to its highly effective egg-white skin care, BB creams we’re still gushing over and bunny-shaped lip glosses you can never quite get enough of. Another true Korean gem: Konjac sponges. Basically loofahs for your face, they remove makeup, exfoliate your skin and are even biodegradable. Find out more on why we’re 100-percent sold.

First, what exactly are they? Konjac sponges are comprised of natural fibers made from the root of the Konjac plant in Korea that absorbs a lot of water. (Other common names include Konjak, Konjaku, and Konnyaku potato.) In nature, the roots are a long, hard substance. But in sponge form, it couldn’t be further from that. It has that same rough look but is actually quite gentle and great for all skin types.

What are the benefits? Just like most non-chemical exfoliators, when you use them regularly you’ll notice smoother, brighter skin. And best of all, because Konjac is non-abrasive, it’s great for cleansing sensitive skin, clogged pores, rosacea and eczema.

OK, so how do I use it? First, soak the sponge for five to ten minutes so it can soften. Squeeze out excess water, and then apply your favorite cleanser on top. Splash your face with water and start (gently) scrubbing in circular motions, focusing on dry areas. When you’re finished, rinse the sponge and let it air-dry. Replace monthly.

OK, I’m sold. Where can I buy them? Thankfully you don’t have to trek all the way to Korea to snag one. Just pop by Target, Wal-Mart or Sephora. Our picks: Boscia ($15), Honest Beauty ($12) and EcoTools ($6).
