Kristin Cavallari accused of 'animal cruelty' after joking about eating pet chicken
Kristin Cavallari’s dinner plans have stirred up quite the debate.
The former Laguna Beach star and current lifestyle influencer is getting flak from vegetarians and vegans after joking about eating her “pet” chicken for dinner.
Cavallari, who also wrote the cookbook True Roots, posted an Instagram on Monday that showed her clutching a chicken under one arm. But it’s the lighthearted tone of her accompanying caption that has ruffled feathers.
Pet today, dinner tomorrow. Kidding. Kind of.

It turns out that Cavallari’s joke about eating the chicken has offended followers who identify as vegan, vegetarian, or simply animal lovers. Her mentions are now full of comments accusing her of “animal cruelty,” while others have defended her right to eat (and joke about) what she pleases.
“It’s not about whether ur [sic] vegan or not,” read one comment. “Anyone who defends this post supports animal cruelty.”
“Kinda disappointed that I have to unfollow you now,” another person wrote Cavallari. “Laugh all you want people, but the lack of empathy and compassion for other beings is what’s wrong with this world.”
“Although you like the taste of chicken (just like most vegans did before going vegan), hopefully one day soon you also agree that ending someone’s life is wrong no matter how it’s done, especially when it’s completely unnecessary for our health or any reason other than you enjoyed that particular flavor,” added a commenter.
Others mocked the backlash from “vegan crazies,” prompting actress Leven Rambin to write, “How is being vegan crazy? Vegans think it is crazy to murder loving souls totally unnecessarily.”
“I don’t understand why people get offended by this,” one of Cavallari’s fans fired back at the controversy. “Not everyone [on] this planet [is] vegan or vegetarian! It was your choice not to eat meat like it’s our choice to eat it. Not a big deal! At least she’s choosing to eat healthy chickens instead of the ones filled with steroids in your nearest grocery store or fast food restaurant.”
It’s not the first time Cavallari’s eating habits have raised ire. She’s also had to defend herself from critics who accuse her of putting her three children on a strict diet.
