Kylie Jenner's hairstylist Tokyo Stylez talks the star's bold looks: 'That was pre-mom'
Tokyo Stylez, Kylie Jenner’s long-time hair and wig stylist says the beauty mogul’s look has changed since giving birth to 1-year-old daughter Stormi Webster.
Stylez spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle from the pink carpet at Beautycon Los Angeles, a bicoastal beauty-and-lifestyle conference featuring some of the hottest brands, influencers, and celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra, Tina Knowles, and Kelly Rowland.
Before the hair master got his hands on Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Cardi B., Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj, he was styling the hair of his little sister. While growing up in Omaha Nebraska, his mother was incarcerated and to help his father care for the 8-year-old girl, he made sure she looked her best.
“...I just remembered her doing her hair all the time. And I just did what I saw my mom do,” Stylez told Refinery29. Later, when the 29-year-old moved to Washington, D.C., he started making wigs for cancer patients and with a boost from social media, Stylez’s reputation started growing.
Today, Stylez has created some of pop culture’s most memorable looks — Jenner’s 2016 Met Gala bob, Kendall Jenner’s delicate updo for the White House Correspondence Dinner that same year, and Cardi B’s lengthy look at London’s Wireless Festival in July.
While Stylez doesn’t have any “favorite” clients, he holds a soft spot for “baby sister Kylie,” who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Saturday on an Italian yacht with boyfriend Travis Scott.
“Kylie’s hair has changed so much from the first time [we worked together] until now,” Stylez tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “She’s such an adult now, she’s grown, and is sophisticated and classy. She keeps it simple and effortless.”
That means a little less color, such as the blue locks Stylez gave her for the Bellami Beauty Bar launch in 2015 or her rose-gold tresses in 2016. “She doesn’t like to do the color thing as much as she did before,” Stylez tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “That was ‘pre-mom.’ After she became a mother, she said, “I can’t do all that extra-ness.’ Now she likes to be super simple.”
Stylez oversaw Kim Kardashian and Kylie’s tresses for their 2016 KKW x Kylie makeup collab, which had them twinning in long, stick-straight styles, and says the sisters don’t have any mandates about their hair. “Both Kylie and Kim are open-minded — they’ve always tried new looks. But they have to be smart and think about how people will perceive them.”
Aside from his “babies” Kylie and Cardi B., Stylez’s style icon is undoubtedly, “the goddess of pop.”
“I would love to style Cher,” Stylez tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “She was an icon, wearing wigs and experimenting with her hair way before anyone else was into it. Next would Janet Jackson and if he were alive today, Michael Jackson.”
Stylez says women who want to attempt wig-wearing should first experiment with color, length, and style. “The most important tip for wearing a wig is proper fit,” he tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “Even a good wig will look terrible if it’s installed improperly.”
He adds, “It’s hair, so just have fun with it.”
