Lady Gaga Explains the Symbolism of Her Schiaparelli Inauguration Dress and Giant Dove Brooch
Lady Gaga wore one of the most dramatic looks of President Joe Biden's inauguration, stepping out to sing the U.S. national anthem in a giant custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture look designed by Daniel Roseberry: a fitted jacket in navy cashmere, a skirt in washed red silk faille, and a giant gilded dove of peace brooch.
After performing, Gaga took to Twitter to explain the symbolism of her pin choice. No, she wasn't trying to channel The Hunger Games' mockingjay; she was trying to send a message of peace to a very divided country. "A dove carrying an olive branch," Gaga wrote. "May we all make peace with each other."
Gaga reflected on the honor of singing The Star-Spangled Banner on Twitter ahead of her performance. "Singing our National Anthem for the American People is my honor," she wrote. "I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change—between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning. My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly. I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land. Respectfully and kindly, Lady Gaga."
The day before the inauguration, Gaga posted a photo of herself wearing a white Givenchy cape dress in the Capitol on Instagram. She called for acceptance and peace on inauguration day. "I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans," she wrote. "A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol ????"
