Lake Metroparks to host 'Bug Day: Instrumental Insects'
Sep. 3—Lake Metroparks announced that "Bug Day: Instrumental Insects" will take place noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at Penitentiary Glen Reservation, 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Road in Kirtland.
Bug Day — geared for both insect enthusiast and those just looking for a fun family outing — offers bug-themed stories, crafts, exhibits and more, according to a news release. Guests are invited to dress in their favorite insect costumes and participate in a costume parade.
"This year's 'instrumental insects' theme represents how bugs curate nature's soundtrack," Lake Metroparks Schoolhouse Interpretive Manager Shayna Swerdlow stated in the release. "Listening in on the hums, chirps and buzzes of insects is a non-invasive way to monitor the health of an ecosystem.
"By incorporating this theme into fun and approachable activities like a bug bebop, we hope to shine some light on the essential role that bugs play."
A bug-themed obstacle course, sustainable craft and bingo game are just a few of the other interactive exhibits and activities on the agenda. Attendees will be able to view live bug encounters plus carefully mounted insects on display.
The Ohio State University's BUGmobile will also be present at the event, allowing guests to watch, touch and even hold various insects within the mobile entomology classroom, the release stated.
Interactive scavenger hunts, photo opportunities and wild animal shows starring Animal Ambassadors from the Lake Metroparks Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center will also be featured throughout the event. Children can earn "Bugology" degrees by participating in five or more of the event's activities.
Miniature train rides will be offered courtesy of the Lake Shore Live Steamers, weather permitting.
Bug Day is free for all ages, and registration is not required. Event information can be found at goto.lakemetroparks.com/bugday.
