Lana Condor dishes on her 'controversial' love for Subway tuna sandwiches and sardines
Because food connects us all, Yahoo Life is serving up a heaping plateful of table talk with people who are passionate about what's on their menu in Deglazed, a series about food.
Lana Condor loves pizza. And, having lived in several states across the U.S. and filmed in many more, she's tried a lot of it. She's even visited Naples, Italy "where apparently pizza was ... birthed" and eaten the famed Neapolitan-style pizza served there. But the 25-year-old actress says the best pizza she's ever had is from her hometown of Seattle, Wash.
"There is this pizzeria," she says, "it's called Serious Pie. I've had so much pizza in my life and Serious Pie — I don't think I've ever had anything better. I like a veggie pie, for sure, so I always get mine with cheese, onion, olives and arugula."
But Condor, whose upcoming limited series Boo, Bitch, comes to Netflix on July 8, doesn't limit her love of fast food to pizza. "I don't think fast food is a guilty pleasure, I think it's just pleasure," she says. "I love In-N-Out Burger. I love Shake Shack. It's so controversial but I love Subway's tuna sandwiches. I know that everyone's like, 'It's not tuna,' but I love it, so whatever it is, I think it's good."
Among her favorite snacks? Canned sardines. "It depends on what type of movie I'm making because if it's like, a romantic movie, then eating canned sardines in between scenes would be great for me, but not for my scene partner."
"I wish I was someone who was like, 'I have oats,' or something healthy," she adds, "but my go-to favorite snack at work has recently been Doritos. I never ate Doritos and I'm 25 and I'm blown away."
Which Doritos flavor does the To All the Boys I've Loved Before actress crave? "Just the nacho cheese," she says. "I'm telling you I've never had it and it's so good. I don't know what to say."
Condor spoke with Yahoo Life as part of her work as a Neutrogena brand ambassador and says while she loves attending summer barbecues and spending more time dining outdoors in warm weather, she's also learned to be diligent with sunscreen. "My mom always said, 'The only time you don't have to wear sunscreen is if you have to use a flashlight,' and that is how I live my life now," she says. "I love the Neutrogena sunscreens you can either spray on or glide on: You're supposed to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, and you don't know where your hands have been. Germs are everywhere, so I always find I use sticks or sprays because you have to reapply and I don't want to touch my face as much."
So what's on her menu this summer? Light and easy meals that hit her two favorite flavors, salty and savory. "I'm not a sweets person," she says. "I'd rather eat a plate of cheese than eat cake. I know that might not make people happy but there it is."
"It's interesting because I think of ingredients as seasonal, but I eat all foods all the time no matter the season," she says, "I was a pescatarian for the majority of my life and I lean that way more every day: I've never really had a steak I liked — a big chunk of meat doesn't do it for me."
