Lara Trump blames shutdown backlash on 'fake news': 'My heart goes out to all of the federal workers affected'
Lara Trump is speaking out after comments she made about the government shutdown had critics comparing her to Marie “Let Them Eat Cake” Antoinette.
President Trump’s daughter-in-law — she married his son Eric in 2014 — sparked backlash after she gave an interview to Bold TV in which she thanked the federal workers who are going without pay during the shutdown for their “sacrifice.”
“Listen, this is… it’s not fair to you, we all get that,” she said. “But this is so much bigger than any one person. It is a little bit of pain, but it’s going to be for the future of our country. … And generations after them will thank them for their sacrifice right now. I know it’s hard.”
Trump’s remarks were accused of downplaying the hardship being experienced by furloughed workers, with conservative commentator Ana Navarro firing back over Twitter. “Federal workers are rationing medicines, making lines that snake around for blocks to get free food, holding garage sales, worrying about paying mortgages and utility bills. How’s Mar-a-Lago?” she wrote. “Maybe u can invite them there to #EatCake.”
Now she’s pushing back against the criticism. In a statement released on Twitter Wednesday, the 36-year-old TV host and producer parroted a phrase popular with her father-in-law and blamed the backlash on “fake news.”
She also accused the mainstream media of “completely misrepresenting my words and my support for furloughed workers,” adding that her “heart goes out” to those suffering from the ongoing shutdown.

The statement, however, doesn’t appear to have convinced her critics, who continue to mock her wealth and accuse Trump of being “out of touch.”
Cut the BS! People can’t buy insulin and pay for chemo! People could possibly die as the result of a useless wall! Trump had 2 years of GOP control and ain’t get a wall. Stop the theatrics and grow up. This is real life! #EndTheTrumpShutdown

Imagine bills and no money. None. None for food, none for shelter, none for gas. Oh yeah you still have to go to work. You are completely out of touch. You can not fathom not having any money. But federal workers can. I know I am one and I see real pain and struggle everyday.

Trump’s Bold TV interview was also slammed during Wednesday’s episode of The View, with resident Republican Meghan McCain calling it “such a bad look.”
“I just feel like if you are a millionaire’s wife, you may not understand that there are families that can’t afford to feed their children,” added co-host Sunny Hostin.
