Large BBQ competition in Kansas gets underway

OSAGE CITY (KSNT) – The Osage City Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the 21st annual Smoke in the Spring Competition.

Friday, April 4 was the “taste” portion of the event. This allowed the community to try award-winning BBQ from 16 of 98 competitors. There was also live music, a kids fun zone, and a firework display.

The competition is scheduled for Saturday, April 5. There is over $25,000 in cash prizes. The top 20 overall win, as well as the top 15 in each individual category.

The categories are: chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket. Some people at the event shared with KSNT what their favorite part was.

“I’d say our favorite part is working at our booth because we’re raising money to go to church camp this summer,” Harper Koenig, who lives in Osage City, said.

“Definitely our booth and then just hanging out with our friends and family,” Kenzie Bellinger, who also lives in Osage City, said.

The competitors come from 11 states, including three teams from Canada.
