Kelli Giddish's time on Law and Order: SVU is quickly coming to a close, with fans upset about the third-longest running character on the show making a surprise exit. But while everyone is on edge about the impending moment, the NBC series may have hinted at where her character Detective Amanda Rollins is heading next.
During the November 3 episode of the hit procedural drama, viewers saw Rollins give a passionate lecture to a group of future criminologists. But as she revealed later on, she wasn't supposed to be up onstage — her romantic partner ADA Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) volunteered her when he had been the one invited to speak. Although the rest of the episode follows the typical format the series has long been known for, it potentially left behind a major clue about Rollins' future.
"Professor Rollins does have a nice ring to it," the show's official Twitter account wrote.
While the tweet was referencing what had just aired, Law and Order: SVU fans weren't too thrilled about it. What's more, they let the show know by taking it to the comments.
"Keeping Kelli Giddish employed on the show also has a nice ring to it, but here we are," one fan noted on Twitter. "Detective is better ??," a different user replied. "Can Professor Rollins be on SVU? That sounds nice to me," another person added.
Although Rollins' official departure from Law and Order: SVU won't happen until the December 8 episode, folks are starting to wonder exactly how the character will be written out after 12 seasons. On Reddit a similar theme seemed to prevalent about how Rollins may leave, and it has to do with Carisi, her daughters and a villain who dates back to season 14.
"I immediately thought of the [Henry] Mesner (Ethan Cutkosky) situation as being most likely too. I could see the kids being threatened and Carisi wanting the best for her. Pretty sure we're getting a wedding and then she's out," user Ravenqueen7 wrote.
Others agreed with the theory. "Henry escapes, goes on yet another rampage and then Rollins makes good on her threat," user Jmpinstl noted in part. "Henry Mesner's trial occurs in [season] 24 (I hope it does at least) and he kidnaps Jesse [Rollins] (Charlotte Cabell) or does something impacting Rollins in some way and she is traumatized and leaves SVU," user Teenagedirtbag109 theorized.
Despite all the different opinions on what could happen next, one thing is certain: Rollins and Carisi will have their moment. Executive producer Julie Martin tweeted this back in August, assuring fans about the couple's future.
"#Rollisi will have a happy ending," she wrote. "Stay tuned."
