Despite an incredibly well-received return this week, it appears that The League of Gentlemen won't be coming back for more any time soon.

Adam Tandy, the show's producer, took to Twitter shortly after this week's final episode with a solemn message that "This is very much the end of the line", adding in a second tweet "Thank you all for coming to visit Royston Vasey. We'll be moving on now."

The three-part revival of the classic Nineties comedy, about the disturbing residents of a fictional Northern England town, was a ratings hit for BBC Two this week, and received significant praise from critics.

"The obvious fear was that League of Gentlemen would return a creaky fossil from simpler – or sillier – times," wrote our Ed Power. "In fact it has re-emerged coated in impregnable comedy formaldehyde."

Despite the speculated permanent end for the series, the comedy will go on tour next year for the first time in over a decade, with stars and writers Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson taking the show to the stage. Additional dates went on sale this week following high demand.

In a statement, the team said: "Performing in a front of an audience gives us the biggest thrill of all. We're overjoyed to be taking the citizens of Royston Vasey on a road-trip and can't wait to see all the wonderful local places in our increasingly local country.

"Plus we'd already gone to the trouble of getting the costumes and learning the voices again for the TV show so we thought why not? Something to do isn't it?"
