COARSEGOLD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Tarantula mating season is in full swing which means it is almost time for Coarsegold’s annual Tarantula Awareness Festival.

Festival organizers understand that many people have their reservations about spiders, especially large, hairy tarantulas, but through education and games, they plan to convert arachnophobes into arachnophiles.

The free family-friendly event aims to dispel the myths surrounding tarantulas and educate the public about their importance to the ecosystem. Eventgoers will learn more about tarantulas and appreciate them as an important part of the ecosystem.

Organizers say there will also be tarantula-themed activities including a tarantula derby and a hairy leg contest. The event will also feature a scream-off, a pizza-eating contest, and a pumpkin pie bake-off.

The festival at Coarsegold’s Historic Village on 35300 Highway 41 will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. Admission is free and parking is $2.
