Leawood Rotary Labor Day 5k run kicks off to promote physical activity

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Leawood Rotary Club hosted the 9th annual Leawood Labor Day 5k run today, September 2.

The yearly event, hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, brings out hundreds of participants to other American Academy of Family Physicians to raise money for local charities.

“So this is our 13th year doing this, and this is a free family event hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints,” said event organizer Shannon Chan.

“We wanted it to be a fun and free event for everyone in the community as well. And so this year, we’re actually partnering up and sponsoring a local charity called Mother’s Refuge, where they’re helping young, pregnant women and mothers to kind of help educate their kids and also just to provide resources for them.”

The races and events were held from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. as family physicians promoted physical activity as a key part of keeping the community healthy.

“This year, we’re excited for everybody to be here,” Chan explained.

“We’ve got over 1,300 participants signed up, we’ve had a lot of kids signed up to run the kid’s race and we have the 5k run and a 3k walk. And so it’s all thanks to everyone here.”

The annual family event is also free to attend.
