Lensabl Is the Clear Solution for Easy Eyeglass-Lens Replacement
There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.
I own four pairs of glasses, but up until quite recently, I was only able to wear one of them. At my last eye exam I got some not-so-great news: my prescription had changed significantly and my nearsightedness was continuing to get worse. (I can't imagine why!)
Though I do have health insurance, my vision plan only covers the lens replacement in one pair of glasses per year, and to change the others right away would cost at least $200 each. Defeated, I stashed my spare pairs away in a drawer and mumbled, "See ya when I'm rich."
Enter Lensabl, a direct-to-consumer prescription-lens company with a simple, yet brilliant mission: They'll update the prescription lenses of any pair of glasses for a mere fraction of the traditional retail cost, starting at $77. They even provide the packaging, which means that all you have to do is box your glasses up and mail them off at your convenience.
I asked Lensabl's co-founder, Andy Bilinsky, if consumers without vision coverage can also take advantage of the service. "Lensabl actually does not accept insurance as payment, so the service is perfect for customers who do not have vision insurance," he says.
The $77 fee may be a small investment, but because the brand works directly with their lab to craft the lenses, they're able to cut out an estimated 70% of the traditional cost of prescription-lens replacement. It's also worth noting that all of their lenses are coated for UV-protection, anti-reflection, and scratch resistance, making them an incredible bargain compared to competitor brands that offer these coatings for an add-on expense! Bilinsky continues, "Even if you do [have insurance], though, Lensabl is often less expensive than your deductible. We are an out-of-network provider, which means you can purchase from Lensabl and then submit our receipt directly to your insurance company for reimbursement."
For those in need of a prescription adjustment right away, Lensabl even offers online eye exams to qualified candidates for $49.99. No appointment is necessary, and the results are reviewed by an in-state ophthalmologist. Of course, an online eye exam won't be able to detect astigmatism or screen for eye diseases, so it's definitely advised that you book a doctor's appointment if you haven't had a check-up in recent years.
After inputting my prescription into their site and shipping one pair of my specs off to their lab, it took Lensabl just a week to replace the lenses. When they showed up on my doorstep in sparkling condition, neatly packaged with a snazzy envelope-style glasses case and cleaning spray, it was like putting on a brand-new pair. I was honestly amazed at how completely painless and easy-to-navigate the entire process was, and I appreciate the company's transparency and that their messaging is free of any product up-sells. On top of all of this, users can send Lensabl three or more pairs at a time for a 25% discount on the total cost! When your sizable inventory of eyeglasses all have the correct prescription, you know you're doing something right.
I'm psyched that Lensabl offers such an easy and affordable service for all specs-wearers, no matter what their current insurance situation. Had I known about the brand sooner, I definitely would've used it immediately to replace all of my prescription lenses, but after all, hindsight is 20/20.
