Can you really make a deep-fried avocado?

This viral TikTok recipe says the answer is a resounding “yes.”

The strange cooking hack — which takes a notoriously health-conscious food and transforms it into a cheesy, greasy fried ball of batter — has been spreading widely on the app. It especially blew up after popular food creator Eitan Bernath tried the recipe himself.

Bernath’s video shows that, at the very least, it is possible to make this thing. But how good does it taste?

Generally, deep-frying anything is a big flavor upgrade. This, however, just seems like one step too far.

That’s why we had to try the recipe for ourselves. So, are fried avocados really better than the original? To find out, watch the video above or keep reading below.

How to make deep-fried avocados

First, the good news. You’ll only need a few simple ingredients for this recipe:

  • Avocados

  • Eggs

  • Flour

  • Breadcrumbs

  • Gruyere cheese (or whatever cheese you prefer)

  • Peanut or vegetable oil

First, peel your avocado completely, using a knife, potato peeler or something similar. Then, heat up several cups of oil in a large pot or deep fryer.

Next, coat your avocados in the batter. Start by rolling the peeled avocado in flour, then egg wash, then finally in a generous amount of breadcrumbs until it’s fully covered. When the oil is heated, carefully lower the avocado inside.

Fry the avocado for several minutes, rotating occasionally until the outside is golden brown. Then remove it and let it dry a bit.

Meanwhile, heat a large serving of gruyere or similar cheese in a saucepan, just until it’s melted. Pour over the top of your avocado and get ready to dig in!

Now, the tricky part. It’s crucial to note that the large avocado seed is still inside, so please be careful when you eat it!

And regardless, is this recipe even worth the effort? In the end, it just tasted like a big ball of batter and cheese — the avocado doesn’t really add much flavor. Also, this recipe is difficult and, because of the seed staying in, pretty inconvenient. While it was fun to try, we’ll be sticking with regular avocados from now on.
