  • Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth announced their split over the weekend after less than a year of marriage.

  • When Hemsworth was approached about the news, he responded, "You don't understand what it's like."

  • Cyrus also vaguely addressed the breakup on Instagram yesterday, writing, "Change is inevitable."

Liam Hemsworth has spoken out about his breakup with Miley Cyrus for the first time. The actor was in his native Australia today when he was approached by Daily Mail Australia about the separation news. His response was short and sullen. "You don't understand what it's like," he told the outlet. "I don't want to talk about it mate."

Hemsworth and Cyrus announced on Saturday that they're parting ways, just over seven months after their intimate December 2018 wedding in Tennessee. The singer's rep explained their split in a statement.

"Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."

Cyrus gave a lengthier, albeit vaguer, response to her split from Hemsworth on Instagram over the weekend. She didn't mention her former husband by name but opened up about personal change in a caption for a photo from a trip with friends. "Don't fight evolution, because you will never win," she wrote. "Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable."

She added, "My dad always told me, 'Nature never hurries but it is always on time' .... it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own .... ."

Hemsworth and Cyrus, who first met on the set of the 2010 movie The Last Song, had just celebrated in June their 10-year anniversary of being together.
