Newspaper typo promises teen 'snakes' instead of 'snacks' at anti-prom event
The Pflugerville Public Library in Pflugerville, Texas, issued a correction after a typo in the local paper caused confusion over an upcoming event. It will be holding an Anti-Prom event, and will generously provide free snacks to attendees. However the library will not, have free snakes, as the paper reported.
An anti-prom, sometimes called a morp, is typically thrown by high schoolers as a form of protest or boycott of their school's traditional spring celebration. To provide a safe space for students to celebrate their anti-prom, the local library will open its doors to teens on Friday.
"The theme of the night is 'Fairy tales,'" the blurb in the Community Impact newspaper read, "and there will be a DJ, snakes and a photo booth."

The librarians at Pflugerville didn't think much of the typo, besides bringing in copies of the paper to show one another. Rose Cobb, 33, the library's marketing specialist told BuzzFeed that she figured the blurb meant to say "snacks."
However, when she got to her desk, she found a handful of messages and emails "asking if we were really going to have snakes."
"I know it sounds weird — we are kind of forward thinking with our programming, so I figured that this one mistake might actually cause some real confusion in our community," Cobb told the outlet. Also adding to the confusion, the library recently did host an animal showcase, and snakes were present.
Cobb took to Facebook to clarify the mistake. "ATTENTION - there will be no snakes at this Friday's Anti Prom at the library. There was a typo in a local paper that said we will have snakes," the library's Facebook post said. "We will have snacks. Snacks is what we will have."
“Anti Prom is a safe space for you to dance — or not — the night away, no matter your sexuality, gender identity, beliefs, or any other reason," Cobb explained, adding that teens can come dressed in fairy tale clothing, traditional prom wear, or casual clothing.
While the safe space and freedom to be who you are does make for a fun night, the library was also conscious about those looking forward to spending time with snakes.
"Not to say we have anything against snakes," a Facebook post read on Monday. "In fact, snakes will be at the library in May during the Teen De-Stressing Day: Reptile Hangout." The event will be held on May 22, and any teen stressed out from finals is invited, space permitting, to hang out with visiting snakes, as well as some lizards and turtles from Austin Reptile Shows.
