Richland County Sheriff's Office promotes corrections officer
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office has announced the promotion of Correctional Officer Wyatt Stanfield to correctional sergeant on Aug. 31.
Sgt. Stanfield was hired as a correctional officer in 2020 and will be assigned to supervisor training on first shift. When that training is completed, he will be assigned to second shift. During his time at the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Stanfield has received an Office Citation Award and a Certificate of Appreciation Award. He graduated from Madison Comprehensive High School in 2020.
Patrol captain promoted to major
COLUMBUS — Capt. Matthew L. Them has been promoted to the rank of major by Col. Charles A. Jones, Ohio Highway Patrol superintendent. Maj. Them will remain in the Office of Finance and Logistics to serve as commander.
Them began his patrol career in May 2004 and was assigned to the Mt. Gilead Post. In 2007, he was selected as Post and District Trooper of the Year. In 2008, he earned the Ace Award for excellence in auto larceny enforcement. He also earned the Criminal Patrol Award four times.
In 2011, Them was promoted to the rank of sergeant and transferred to the Marion Post to serve as an assistant post commander. As a sergeant, he also served at the Bucyrus District Headquarters. In 2015, Them was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and transferred to the Mansfield Post to serve as post commander. As a lieutenant, he also served in the Office of Planning, Research and Development.
In 2017, Them was promoted to the rank of staff lieutenant and remained in the Office of Planning, Research and Development. As a staff lieutenant, he also served in Fiscal Services. In 2021, he was promoted to the rank of captain and transferred to the Office of Finance and Logistics.
Area Agency on Aging holds Provider Day event for their staff
The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. held a Provider Day during their Employee Appreciation Week. It was a way for everyone to stay connected and gave an opportunity for providers to meet staff and to share information about their organizations.
The Area Agency on Aging providers and team members aim to provide services to their communities in the best way to support healthy and independent living.

Richland County Foundation awards TAP grants to Abraxas
SHELBY — The Richland County Foundation recently awarded educational program grants for this school year to local teachers across Richland County for their creative or supplemental programs not covered by school funding. The Teacher Assistance Program (TAP) Grants are awarded to individual classroom teachers or small teams of classroom teachers with a maximum grant amount of $1,500.
This year, three Abraxas teachers received TAP grants:
$1,372.38 Art for Everyone (art supplies for students) - Lisa Yarger
$962.31 Classroom Supplies (to complete projects such as blankets for the homeless) - Julie Pfeifer
$1,355.70 Expanding Knowledge (benefiting in history and physical education classes) - Doug Thomas
“Abraxas School of Ohio is blessed to have amazing teachers who always choose to go above and beyond for our students," noted Principal Jolene Edwards. "I’m also very grateful for the Richland County Foundation and their continued support of our school through the grant funding.”

● University of Iowa: Cory Kromer-Edwards of Ontario was recently awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Kromer-Edwards was a student in the Graduate College whose program of study was computer science.
● Ohio Wesleyan University: Jacob Williams of Shelby has been named an Economics Management Fellow. The fellows are selected based on their high potential for success at Ohio Wesleyan and their interest in business-related studies.
GOAL Digital Academy makes strides in attendance initiatives
GOAL Digital Academy is participating in Attendance Awareness Month, a nationwide initiative dedicated to emphasizing the importance of regular school attendance for students' academic success. This September, GOAL is taking a proactive approach to inspire students, parents and the community to recognize the critical role that attendance plays in shaping the future of our students.
GOAL's attendance department has an Attendance Tip Sheet that encourages students to set and commit to clear attendance goals. Guidelines include logging day attendance, establishing a routine and managing distractions.
In addition to new literature being sent out to students and their families, GOAL's Student Attendance System, has launched a user-friendly interface to easily log participation hours consistently.
