CDC guidelines recommend “cloth face coverings in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain” to help slow the spread of coronavirus.
This is a rapidly developing situation. For the most up-to-date information, check resources like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and and local health official updates regularly. This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
Beginning July 27, gym-goers at Life Time will be required to wear a mask at all clubs nationwide. Additionally, clubs are taking other precautions such as putting social distancing measures in place, limiting class sizes, requiring temperature screenings before entering, and increasing cleaning measures.
In some locations where gyms are open and local governments have made masks mandatory, this protocol is already in effect.
Additionally, Life Time has put together a list of tips for how to get your best workout, and do it safely, in a mask, including using your diaphragm to breathe instead of your chest or reducing the intensity of your workouts to start as you become used to breathing in a mask during a workout.
To make this decision, Life Time enlisted a former state epidemiologist with a wide range of experiences in clinical occupational and environment medicine to ensure that its protocols fairly satisfy the latest public health considerations, according to a press release.

Some other ways to help reduce the spread of coronavirus and keep yourself and others safe include working out outside and going to the gym during off-peak hours whenever possible. And, it’s always best to keep a distance of at least six feet from others in the gym during your workout. Most importantly, stay home if you have been feeling sick.
“Our decision to require masks across all clubs is a response to the ongoing concerns nationwide and, in addition to our health and safety protocols already in place, is a simple but effective measure for providing our valued members with the safest environment possible and to remain open, which helps ensure the livelihood and employment of our team members,” Life Time Chief Operating Officer Jeff Zwiefel said in a press statement.
Be sure to check your local health guidelines and with your local club before making any decisions on whether returning to the gym is safe for you.
