Light Up at Night with Giro's New Reflective Shoes
With summer winding down and the days shortening, it won’t be long until we’re chasing daylight at the ends of our rides and commutes—and hoping cars can still see us. If you’re tired of wearing layers of neon clothing to stand out on the roads, you’re in luck: Giro has launched new versions of its Empire ACC and Republic LX shoes with a reflective upper that will greatly increase nighttime visibility.

The shoe’s upper is made of the exact material found in the regular model, and features the same ultra-comfortable, lace-up closure that has made both of these shoes staff favorites. The only difference: a special reflective treatment on the uppers’ material, developed by JRC Reflex, that shines brightly when hit with light. Giro reached out to the company after seeing the technology used in track suits at the London Olympics.
The shoes’ retail price remains the same as the standard versions despite the added reflectivity, with the commuter-friendly Republic LX priced at $190 and the performance-inspired Empire ACC priced at $275. Expect these shoes to start appearing in shops around early November. (Coincidentally, Daylight Saving Time starts November 1.).
