'Loki' star Sophia DiMartino was breastfeeding and pumping during filming: 'It’s not easy being a working mama'
Loki actress Sophia Di Martino has previously shared that she was pregnant when she auditioned for the role of Sylvie, a variant of the god of mischief. Now, she's revealing how motherhood has influenced her costume.
Di Martino shared a photo of herself in her Loki outfit to social media on Thursday and revealed how the show's costume designer modified her look to allow her to breastfeed her baby and pump while she's on set. "It’s not easy being a working Mama (Understatement!)" she wrote in the caption.
Di Martino said that the show's costume designer, Christine Wada, "designed Sylvie’s costume and had the genius idea of adding concealed zippers for easy access so that I could use my @elvie pumps easily and nurse my baby between takes."
"It’s little (big) things like this that made it possible for me to do my job AND be a parent. I’m forever grateful," she said.
Di Martino showed how her costume works in the photos, with two panels removed over her breasts, showcasing her bra.
The comments were filled with praise and support. "I'm kneeling," one person wrote. "This is a genius idea! I'm so happy they accommodated you in this brilliant way," another said. "This is amazing," a fan chimed in on Twitter. "I'm so glad they made space for you as a new mom, and they made space for your new baby!!"
The federal Break Time for Nursing Mothers law requires that employers that are covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) must provide basic accommodations for breastfeeding mothers at work. Those include things like time for moms to pump milk and a private space that is not a bathroom each time they need to pump. However, altering costumes to allow for breastfeeding and pumping goes well beyond what's required by law.
Di Martino told Variety late last week that she was "heavily pregnant" when she auditioned for the role of Sylvie. “It was the shortest casting experience I think I’ve ever had,” she said. “I did an audition tape with a very short scene. I wasn’t asked to do it again, and I couldn’t meet anyone because I was heavily pregnant at the time and I couldn’t travel."
Di Martino said the whole process was "extremely quick and quite surprising to all involved. Me and my agent were both like, ‘Really? Are you sure? This is crazy? Okay, fine! We’ll do it! We’re in!'"
