Long Island middle schoolers are being told to leave their $350 hats at home
A Long Island middle school is telling their students to keep their hats on … literally.
At Great Neck North Middle School, the students are so frequently losing their $350 Moncler hats that administrators are asking parents to prevent their teens from wearing the pricey chapeaus to class.
“We understand that fashion is very important to our middle schoolers,” administrators wrote to parents in a letter obtained by the New York Post. “However, we have had many students who have worn their Moncler Winter Pom Pom hats to school and either lost or misplaced them.”
The note continued, “We need your help! Please try and redirect your middle schooler from wearing these hats to school. … It has consumed a great deal of our time trying to locate these missing hats, and it has been disruptive to the students’ focus and time as well.”
Moncler is a luxury winter-wear brand. The now Italian-owned company, which originally sold sleeping bags, took its name from the abbreviation of Monestier-de-Clermont, an Alpine village near Grenoble, France. The brand rose to international fame when the French national downhill ski team wore the brand’s outerwear at the Grenoble Winter Olympics in 1968 and has maintained popularity ever since. The knit caps, which retail for $350 and come in a rainbow of colors, are made of pure virgin wool and have a fox-fur pompom adorning the top. The Moncler website describes them as “extremely soft pure wool to tackle the most hostile urban temperatures, like sudden snowfall on a ski slope.” Or a middle school on Long Island, of course!
The description also draws attention to the fact that the hats are “an accessory with almost architectural surfaces and an exuberant personality, an elegant athletic detail, the perfect finishing touch to all your winter looks.” The child-size version, which retails for $170, is currently out of stock.
