Lost at Sea: Officials Rescue Group of Surfers Stranded 34 Miles from Shore

Surfers will do almost anything to find good waves.

Call in sick to work. Fly for days in coach. Endure rough boat trips to remote islands. Take cold (or no) showers for weeks. Risk malaria, sea snakes, Bali belly, and going broke.

How about a new one? Like capsizing a small boat searching for surf near the Great Barrier Reef and getting stranded almost 40 miles from land. Yikes.

That's what a group of Australian surfers did in the clip above.

Details are still scarce, but the post above by 9News Queensland reports the basics.

Captioning the news clip, 9News wrote:

"Thanks everyone for tuning in. A Queensland surfer has filmed his journey lost at sea after rough waters threw him and a group of friends from their boat – stranding them 55km from land. #9News"

The clip shows a handful of surfers and their shortboards getting rescued by Australian officials after getting stranded 55 kilometers, or around 34 miles, from shore for an unknown length of time.

A reporter narrates and says:

"A Queensland surfer has filmed his harrowing journey lost at sea after rough waters threw him and a group of friends from their boat, stranding them 55 km from land."

She says that their day trip to Lady Elliot Island, located at the tip of the Great Barrier Reef, lasted "longer than expected."

Finally, one of the surfers says to his camera:

"Our rescue boat has arrived. Thanks everyone for tuning in and we are getting rescued. We've been rescued."

The surfers were rescued by LifeFlight Bundaberg and Volunteer Marine Rescue.

According to the BBC, Lady Elliot Island is located near the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef and is known for its beauty, wildlife, and epic surf.
