Love ‘Bridgerton’? You Need to Watch Netflix’s New #9-Ranked Movie

1 min read

There’s something oddly calming about watching a period drama like Bridgerton. Not only do they take us back in time, but they also remind us why corsets didn’t stick around for very long.

That’s exactly the case with Netflix’s all-new romantic flick: Silver Skates. The Russian film recently premiered on the streaming service, and it’s already landed a spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked at number nine behind must-watch titles like Fatherhood, Wish Dragon, Security and Home.)

The story begins at Christmastime in 1899 and continues into the early 1900s, following an unlikely love story between two strangers in Saint Petersburg. First there’s Matvey (Fedor Fedotov), a talented ice-skating courier who has only one treasure to his name: a pair of silver skates. Then there’s Alisa (Sofya Priss), the rebellious daughter of a wealthy—and highly respected—minister.

When Matvey is dared to break into Alisa’s room, he soon develops feelings for the girl, even though she’s engaged to Captain Prince Arkadiy Trubetskoy (Kirill Zaytsev). While this film clearly lacks the joyous diversity of Bridgerton, fans of the Shonda Rhimes show are likely to find themselves drawn to the similarly high dramatics, elaborate costumes and forbidden romance.

Silver Skates served as Michael Lockshin’s directorial debut. Other cast members include Yuri Borisov, Aleksei Guskov, Severija Janusauskaite, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Timofey Tribuntsev, Aleksandra Revenko, Vasiliy Kopeikin, Mikhail Shelomentsev, Bato Shoinjonov, Sergey Koltakov, Denis Lavant, Cathy Belton, Valery Kukhareshin, Sergey Barkovskiy, Elena Rufanova and Vasiliy Shchipitsyn.

So, will Alisa follow through with her engagement? Or will she join Matvey and flee to Paris? Guess you’ll have to tune in to find out.
