There are a few foods I always associate with luxury: truffles (the mushrooms, not the chocolates), Wagyu beef, and caviar. As such, they are rarely things I think to have in my own house, let alone to bring to parties. But my perception here might be changing — at least in relation to caviar (not something I thought I’d be saying, to be honest).

It’s not exactly a secret that caviar can be pretty pricey (although not all of it is). Because of that, it’s not something that is all that approachable for the everyday home cook or host (like myself). But when I learned Fishwife — yes, the tinned fish brand — was launching its first caviar, I was intrigued. So I got my hands on a jar and was delightfully surprised at how nice it was in every way, from the packaging to the flavor to the thoughtfulness behind it. And that extends to the price point, too, which is $99 for a 1-ounce jar. And while this price won’t make it a kitchen staple like the brand’s tinned fish, it doesn’t seem out of reach to have on hand every so often, like for preparing a luxe appetizer or including it on its own in your spread this holiday season. And better yet, it was made with a caviar brand known for being sustainable.

What Is Fishwife’s California White Sturgeon Caviar?

Fishwife is known for its assortment of tasty tinned fish (the brand’s collab with Fly By Jing has produced some of my favorite canned salmon ever) and its fun, colorful packaging. Now, Fishwife has stepped into another dimension with its new launch: California White Sturgeon Caviar. And just in time for the holidays!

One thing that’s really cool about Fishwife’s first foray into caviar is that it’s both sustainable and decently affordable. Working with Tsar Nicoulai — a caviar brand with a sturgeon farm that boasts an ECO-CERT certification — Fishwife’s new caviar is one we can feel good about (and let me tell you, that’s not true for all the caviar out there).

Beyond that, you can also get this caviar for under $100 when you choose the 1-ounce option (there’s also a 2-ounce option available for $150), making this a pretty affordable little luxury you can grab ahead of the holidays to wow your friends and family. And you’ll get more than just caviar with your purchase: You’ll also receive a mother-of-pearl spoon to use with your caviar!

Why I Love Fishwife’s California White Sturgeon Caviar

Once upon a time, I worked for a finance magazine that catered to the wealthy (and super wealthy). As part of this, I wrote quite a few luxury lifestyle stories and got to eat a lot of incredible, fancy food. Caviar was among these foods. This was really where I learned about caviar and got my first opportunity to try it (which I can recognize I was very lucky for). The first issue I encountered with it, though, was getting the packaging open. Yep, caviar packaging can be very stubborn if you, like me, don’t own a caviar key to open it with. Fishwife’s caviar doesn’t present this problem, thankfully, as it comes in a small glass jar with a twist-off top. So this time I didn’t have to worry about using a penny (talk about high-low) to pop the jar open.

But of course, what I enjoyed most of all was the caviar itself. It has a clean, briny flavor that is anything but fishy. I took the suggestion on Fishwife’s website and piled it on top of potato chips and crème fra?che (although if you can’t find that, I think sour cream would work as well). I didn’t have chives, as the site suggests, so I used some diced shallots instead. I found myself snacking on this for a couple of days because it was so good. It tasted like French onion dip with a pop of briny saltiness from the caviar. Who knew caviar would be a part of my new favorite fall snack? (Spoiler: Definitely not me.)

I’ve seen California White Sturgeon Caviar go for as much as $250 for a couple of ounces, so I love that with Fishwife’s new caviar you can get that tasty, salty roe for a good mid-range price point. Plus, it’s a low-key luxe way to level up your holiday spread and wow guests this season.
