Lupita Nyong’o’s Graphic Eye and Grey Lip
Lupita Nyong’o’s beauty looks consistently slay, but this bold eye and trend-setting lip is daring even for her. Makeup artist Nick Barose gave the actress a white cat eye that contrasted beautifully against her skin. “Drawing inspiration from a lot of the 60s makeup when colors that might seem too ‘pasty’ like chalky white, really light pink, etc. were the norm (think Mary Quant),” Barose wrote on Instagram. “Graphic eyes [are] on trend but on dark skin, black liquid liner doesn’t contrast and pop the same way as on lighter skin, so try going opposite by using white instead.” Using Lancome’s Drama Liqui Pencil in French Lace, he gave the graphic eye trend a striking update.

“My rule of thumb is, if the foundation looks fresh, you can go a bit odd and fun with the rest, because why not!” Barose writes. Using matte skin with no contour and minimal blush as a base, Barose gave Lupita a unique lip look. “Nude lips can look too ‘regular,’ but if you add some strange undertone to it like grey, it will instantly add drama but still stay neutral, so… it’s statement making but it’s not a loud color,” he wrote. “A light pretty pink would’ve been prettier and more traditional, but pretty is overrated.” To achieve the grey lip, Barose used Lancome’s Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in Gris Rivoli on top of a light nude lipstick, but he says you can also use grey eyeshadow. We love to see experimental makeup hitting the red carpet, and Nyong’o is a definite trend setter.
