Made for KC BBQ Champion to become pitmaster at KCAI BBQ restaurant
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The third annual Made for KC BBQ Championship kicked off on Saturday in Weston, MO.
The barbecue competition saw overcast skies, but the competition was heating up.
“Consistency is what’s going to win today. And I’ve pretty been pretty consistent. So, I am feeling pretty good,” said Brent Richardson, pitmaster of Slabs.com.
He and his team have transformed a short school bus into a competition barbecue vehicle.
“Yeah, it’s definitely a head-turner, especially when we’re driving from home to a contest,” Richardson said.
“Everyone’s looking like they do a double take because there’s a huge smoker behind it.”

The grand prize for the competition is unlike other cook offs. The pitmasters were competing to be the pitmaster at the Kansas City BBQ Experience Restaurant in the Kansas City International Airport. They’ll take over the license to the restaurant in March of 2025.
“There’s no other contest like that,” said Brandon Bailey with Tornado BBQ.
“Especially if you have a small business.”
Along with the traditional categories of pork ribs, brisket and chicken, the competition featured a cocktail contest, which did not count towards the overall team score.
“We have a margarita out of bourbon and we are calling it the F-9 Margarita because we are Tornado BBQ,” said Monica Bailey.
“I think it’s just fun to have different competitions within, you know, the regular barbecue competition. It gets you to think outside the box and have other people in your team be able to create and enjoy the experience.”
The competition was won by Meat Rushmore BBQ, who will take over the restaurant license.
Monica Bailey says no matter who won, she planned to support the business.
“Whoever wins, go and try it at the airport. Go and support these teams that work really hard to do the competitions,” she said.
