Maisie Williams's Boyfriend Helped Design Her Edgy Emmys Dress
Maisie Williams, AKA Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, wore a custom dress by JW Anderson to the 2019 Emmy Awards.
Her boyfriend, Reuben Selby, helped create a custom design for the actress to wear to the ceremony.
Williams is nominated in the Supporting Actress in a Drama category for the second time. Her first was in 2016.
Maisie Williams arrived to the 2019 Emmys wearing a custom design by JW Anderson—and her boyfriend, Reuben Selby. Williams and Selby—a photographer, fashion designer, and young creative—first discussed the collaboration with designer Jonathan Anderson over the summer.
“I’ve always wanted the perfect custom red carpet dress—something that I feel really confident and comfortable in," Williams said in a statement. "I asked Ruben if he would design something with me in mind; my height, my shape, my likes and insecurities. I love collaborating on the dresses I wear, I wish I could do it more. Being 5 feet tall it is almost impossible to wear something straight off the hanger."
The result was a sleeveless, asymmetrical dress featuring various black fabrics adorned with custom embroidery and crystals, according to the designer. Williams wore the look with her newly-dyed brunette bob, a drastic change from her pastel pink locks.
"I've been following Jonathan's work since his first womenswear collection so I'm pretty familiar with his style," Selby, who accompanied Williams to tonight's ceremony, said in a comment. "I think we have a similar way of visualizing things, which meant that when he saw the sketches he immediately understood the concept and what we were trying to achieve."
At the young age of 22, Williams has already scored two acting Emmy nominations. Her first was in 2016, in the Supporting Actress in a Drama category for her role as Arya. Three years later, she was nominated again for the same title. In true Gen-Z fashion, Williams responded to her Emmy nod with the perfect gif when the nominations were first announced in July.
