Male salon owner punches mother in the face after her child shoplifts a keychain
An upsetting video of a beauty supply store owner punching a mother in the face is burning up social media.
The viral recording, which surfaced Monday, shows a man identified by police as Changseok Jun, owner of Jun’s Beauty Supply in Tulsa, Okla., punching the woman outside the store Sunday after her child pocketed a small item as the family was walking out the door.
The altercation was shot by an unknown witness and shared on social media, including by social activist Shaun King, who tweeted, “This is the 2nd time an Asian owner of a Black beauty supply shop has physically attacked a Black woman in the past week.”

Yahoo Lifestyle could not reach a representative at Jun’s Beauty Supply for comment.
Sergeant Shane Tuell of the Tulsa Police Department tells Yahoo Lifestyle that the attack occurred early Sunday evening when a small child, unbeknownst to his or her mother, took an item from the store without paying.
“Mr. Jun followed the victim outside to confront her, and she threw the item back inside the store, then pushed him in his upper torso as she was leaving,” says Tuell. “Mr. Jun then punched the woman in the right side of her mouth with his closed fist.”
Jun was charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanor, and was ordered to appear in court on Sept. 12. A judge will rule on what happens next, but Tuell says possibilities include a fine or community service. The victim, whose name is not known, has the option to sue Jun.
People feuded on Twitter about which party was wronged and whether the shop owner was racist.
I doubt he needed stitches. She clearly caused him no harm & she was walking away so he wasn’t protecting himself

No, she did not hit him first.
He stalked her out of the store, berated her non stop, and as she walked away and put her hand up to get him away, he punched her from behind with a closed first.
He bloodied her mouth. She required stitches. https://t.co/md9vvpGt4U

I rewatched this and I think you have a valid and fair point. However, I do think the response was disproportionate and done in retaliation, not to protect himself. Again, I wonder if he would have made the same choice if she was a white woman.

She hardly hit him. That’s dramatic. She used her arm to lightly push him.

My boys have walked out of stores with little things often over the years. I always return them. I’ve never been punched because of it. Black women don’t have that liberty. That is both sickening and enraging. If it had been a white woman he wouldn’t have done that.

During the first week of August, a violent outburst occurred at the New Red Apple Nails salon in Brooklyn after a customer allegedly took issue with a “botched eyebrow wax” and refused to pay for the service.
One employee hit a woman with a broomstick, while others threw punches. According to witness Mercy Maduka, who shot the video, the staff was “hitting [the women] like animals.” Ultimately, as the New York Post reported, both an employee and a customer faced criminal charges.
“It was crazy how you can hit someone and her grandma because of $5,” Maduka told Yahoo Lifestyle.
