Man with dementia asks to relive his wedding day with wife, 54 years later
Frank Borg’s family noticed changes in his memory a few years ago. But even in the two years since his dementia diagnosis and relocation to hospice care, Frank hasn’t forgotten about the deep love he has for his wife, Sue Borg. Instead, his memory of their love seems to be one thing that keeps him going — so much so, that he asked that they get remarried.
As part of the Mosaic Dreams program at Azura Memory Care in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Frank was asked about what his best day would be in order for the facility to make it a reality. Immediately, he told caretakers that his dream was to relive his wedding day with his wife. On Wednesday, they recreated that very day that was over five decades ago.
“Frank is one of the most romantic guys you could ever meet. His love for Sue started in his teens and is still incredibly evident even after 54 years of marriage,” Paula Gibson from Azura Memory Care tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “When [Sue] walks into a room his eyes light up and you can just see the love and respect he continues to have for her. It’s truly breathtaking!”
Among the many things that Frank continues to forget as a result of his dementia, Gibson explains that Sue has never been one of them. Although every time Sue walks into the room, Gibson says that Frank seems to fall in love all over again.
“[Sue] visits at least once per day and every time, it’s like he has seen her for the first time and falls in love at first sight,” Gibson says. “While he forgets much of everything else, she is his constant and always on his mind.”
Frank’s strong feelings for his wife inspired the exact recreation of his and Sue’s special day, down to her bouquet and the couple’s cake. Now, the couple has two memories of the life-changing day to last them beyond their own lifetimes.
