'This is just like in the movies': Man hit by his own SUV after getting stuck in tornado's path
A 47-year-old dad is recovering from a broken shinbone after battling a tornado that hit Douglas County, Kan. on Tuesday night. The man, Terry Seymour, was one of 17 people injured in the storm, as reported by FOX4KC.
Seymour was hit by his own Jeep, which became airborne during the tornado.
He was at first driving from the town of Eudora, when he received an emergency alert on his phone and then a text from his wife telling him the tornado was on its way. That’s when Seymour tried to find shelter by laying in a ditch, and later, next to his Jeep, to escape the wind and rain, as reported by FOX4KC.
“Even halfway down the ditch, I was still getting clobbered with the winds and rain,” he told FOX4KC.
Seymour moved out of the ditch and closer to his Jeep, hoping it would act as a barrier between him and the elements. But things didn’t go as planned, and the tornado pushed the SUV out of the way.
“I saw the Jeep lift off the ground, and it went over my head,” Seymour told FOX4KC. “My first thought was, 'This is just like in the movies.'“
The Jeep crashed into Seymour’s leg, breaking his tibia. According to FOX4KC, Seymour was then transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where surgeons had to “insert a rod below his knee to stabilize Seymour’s broken bone.”
Seymour knew his leg was broken immediately.
“As soon as it happened, I knew it was broken because my leg, it just flopped,” he told FOX4KC. “If it had landed anyplace else besides my leg, I don’t think I would be here.”
While Seymour is still recovering, he’s thankful for the help he had on the way, and grateful that his family wasn’t out in the tornado with him.
According to FOX4KC, a passerby named Tracy stopped and waited with him until emergency medial services arrived, after the wind died down.
Seymour is expected to make a full recovery, but it’s unclear how long it will take for him to get back on his feet.
He did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Yahoo Lifestyle.
