A man named Sober arrested in Pennsylvania for not being sober
There is a hypothesis called nominative determinism that suggests people gravitate towards jobs or situations that fit their names. For example, WABC’s meteorologist’s name is Amy Freeze, and Usain Bolt is a world-record sprinter. Daniel Sober’s recent crime refutes this hypothesis.
WTAE reports that a man named Daniel Sober was arrested for being, well, not sober, last Saturday in Pennsylvania.
Officers were investigating an unrelated 911 call in Middlesex Township when they noticed a “suspicious” vehicle. Behind the wheel was 44-year-old Sober, who claimed he was giving his girlfriend a ride so she could see her son.
The officers smelled alcohol and tested Sober’s breath at the scene, resulting in his arrest. At the station, a formal test showed that Sober’s blood alcohol level was .194. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is .08.
The Smoking Gun reported that Sober was charged with drunk driving and careless driving. He has since been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 20.
In Pennsylvania, a person who is arrested and convicted of drunk driving for the first time must serve six months probation, as well as pay a $300 fine. A judge may also choose to impose up to 150 hours of community service. Based on Sober’s blood alcohol level, however, his punishment may be more severe.
