Man tells black grandmother campaigning for Beto O'Rourke to go 'back where you came from'
Two little girls whose grandmother was called a “stupid b****” by a white man while they campaigned for Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke, say racism won’t deter them.
“Block walking in support of your preferred candidate or party is about as American as Apple pie….right?” wrote mom Allison Odom on Facebook Sunday. “Yesterday, while doing this “American as apple pie” activity within walking distance of my mother’s house, a man approached my mother and daughters and (among other choice words) demanded that they ‘go back where they came from’ because this is HIS neighborhood.”
The mother from Texas wrote, “In 2018, some people are emboldened enough in their hate to accost a 70-year-old grandmother and her 8- and 10-year-old granddaughters. Please let this be a wake-up call of how real and unhinged the hate has become. We must call it out, and we must demand better.”
Allison, who did not return Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, included a video of her children relaying the story, which received more than 13K views.
On Saturday, while campaigning for the Texas candidate, the girls and their grandmother, Rose Odom, pulled their car over to look for an address. “A guy walked up to her and said, ‘What are you doing here?'” explained one of the children.
The grandmother asked, “What are you doing here?” The man answered, “I’m just walking my dog, and I live here.” When Rose informed the man that she was also a resident, he said, “That still doesn’t explain to me why you’re here.”
After telling him, “It’s none of your business,” the man called her a “moron” to which Rose responded, “Idiot.”
“And he told granny to get the f*** back where she came from,” one of the girls said, spelling out the curse word.
The other little girl chimed in, “And then granny said, ‘Well, you need to go back where you came from. I hope one day, if you meet an idiot too, that the idiot will have more respect for your grandchildren than you’ve shown me and mine.”
Rose also told the man, “If you’re feeling threatened by me, why don’t you just call 911?”
The man walked away, calling the grandmother a “moron” and a “stupid b****.”
“He, I guess, suspected because we were black we were about to rob his neighborhood,” said one of the girls. “He probably wouldn’t have done that to a white person because there were white people parked all around us in their cars.”
However, when asked by Allison if the incident would prevent them from campaigning with their grandmother again, one said, “I can do whatever I want — well, not whatever — but whatever I’m allowed to do … without anybody stopping me…”
