Managing grasshoppers in lawns and gardens

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — San Angelo residents say they see an influx of insects including more grasshoppers in their lawns and gardens.

Grasshoppers can cause damage to plants and tree leaves. They’re some of the most widespread and damaging pests in Texas. Out of the 150 species of grasshoppers in Texas, only about five species cause damage to crops and landscaping. They become very destructive during outbreaks and around the area grasshopper eggs have just hatched.

“The key is getting them early like right now, while they’re young, they’re a lot easier to control,” says Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Agent Josh Blanek. He continues, “If you’re a homeowner there’s several different products that you can use. Any of your pyrethrum or pyrethroids, your seven-type products that are out at all your local stories. You can use those/ Those are residual herbicides and you apply them to your plants. If you are using it in your vegetable garden, just make sure you read the label and see that they’re approved.”

He says now is the time to target grasshoppers in your yard because their populations are easier to control when they’re young.
